Behind the Scenes with Artist Angel Lara Vargas

Nestled along the pristine beaches of Nosara, Costa Rica, a burgeoning art scene is quietly making waves, thanks in part to the visionary work of sculptor Angel Lara. Vargas. Recently, we had the privilege of going behind the scenes with Lara to learn more about his creative process and the inspiration behind his work.

Ángel Lara Vargas is a Costa Rican sculptor, he studied at the Castella Conservatory, as well as Plastic Arts with an emphasis on sculpture at the University of Costa Rica. From an early age he was exposed to this art, as he grew up in the sculpture workshop of his father, who is named after him. In recent years, his work as a sculptor has moved away from the traditional academics that are his roots, as a stone carver. He has recently turned to the production of decontextualized sculptural objects, which in turn can be functional. His works are today all over the globe. His largest torso measures 4.5 meters and is in South Korea. There are also pieces in Australia, Germany, Russia and the United States.

The Lotus

ANGEL LARA V

THE LOTUS.

As we strolled through Lara's sun-drenched studio in San Jose, he shared insights into the creation of "The Lotus" – a striking sculpture that now graces the heart of Nosara. Crafted from stainless steel and standing at an impressive height, the lotus flower symbolizes purity, enlightenment, and rebirth, reflecting Lara's own journey as an artist.

"The lotus has always held a special significance for me," Lara explained, his eyes alight with passion.” With delicate precision, Lara meticulously infuses the sculpture with a sense of ethereal grace. The Lotus serves as a focal point for contemplation and introspection, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the interconnectedness of all things. DESIGN INSPIRATION

The topic of waste management has always been an important factor in Ángel's career. It was in the devastated edges of his father's sculptures that he began to see and make his shapes. These rings are handmade with the residual material from the computer-assisted cutting sheets (CNC Plasma) from the “Phi-Lotus Module”. Learn more:
