Just north of Nosara lies one of Costa Rica’s most extraordinary protected areas: the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. This globally significant refuge protects nesting beaches, mangroves, rivers, and coastal ecosystems that are essential to both wildlife and the long-term health of the region. The olive ridley sea turtles arrive by the thousands during dramatic arribadas, while the much larger and rarer leatherback turtles also nest along these protected shores, highlighting the area’s global conservation importance.

Ostional is best known as one of the world’s most important nesting sites for olive ridley sea turtles, where thousands arrive simultaneously during the awe-inspiring arribadas.
